Liposuction vs. Kybella: Which Is Better for Removing a Double Chin? By Joseph M. Brown, MD, FACS on September 01, 2024

For many of us, even though we diet, exercise, and generally lead a healthy lifestyle, a well-defined jawline eludes us due to a double chin. When stubborn fat deposits insist on staying put in the lower third of the face, it can affect your appearance and confidence. Thanks to modern cosmetic treatments, there are ways to quickly eliminate the dreaded double chin for good.

Dr. Joseph Brown in TampaFL, invites you to take a look at a double chin treatment comparisonfacial liposuction vs. Kybella®.

A Classic Surgical Solution vs. a Relatively New Injectable

Let’s cover the basics first.

What Is Liposuction?

By now, many of us are familiar with the concept of liposuction: excess fatty tissue is removed from under the skin using gentle suction. This process involves only small incisions, and is considered a surgical procedure.

What Is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that usually takes place over at least two sessions at our Tampa offices, each lasting about 30 minutes. The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a substance found naturally in the body, which breaks down fat cells before they are gradually eliminated from the body.

Two Means of Achieving Permanent Results

Both facial liposuction and Kybella can permanently eliminate your double chin.

However, you must remember that although these solutions can permanently remove fat cells, that doesn’t mean new fat tissue can’t develop. After undergoing either procedure, take care to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to maintain your results.

How Quickly Will They Get Rid of My Double Chin?

One stark difference between these two procedures is the amount of time it will take to see results. Facial liposuction results are virtually instant, although it’s important to understand that you will have some swelling in the area and probably need to wear a compression garment for a week or longer after surgery.

Depending on the amount of tissue you want to eliminate, Kybella results may take four to six weeks after your first treatment session to become noticeable.

Downtime and Recovery

This is an area where the differences become more apparent.

Recovering from a Liposuction Surgery

After liposuction, you will need to take a little time off work, depending on how strenuous your job is. If you work at a desk, you can likely go back to work after just a few days. You will probably need to wear a special compression garment all day for at least a few days, and you may need to continue wearing it at night for one week to 10 days. Some bruising and swelling can be expected to last up to six weeks.

Recovering from a Kybella Injection

Kybella has no significant downtime. You should plan to go home and rest for the remainder of the day following treatment, but most patients can resume their normal routine the next day. You can expect some swelling for about one to four weeks after each injection, which will be spaced about a month apart. Swelling is usually less pronounced with subsequent injections.

What About Cost?

Kybella often costs less than liposuction, but you must remember that Kybella may require several sessions, which could bring the cost of both options closer than you might assume.

So Which Should I Choose?

This is one question that must be answered in person by an expert. Dr. Brown is known for helping patients look their very best through customized treatment based on their individual needs and goals.
