Current Trends In Breast Augmentation By Joseph M. Brown, MD, FACS on October 26, 2021

Plastic surgery is just one tool that people use to shape the way the world sees them. As with all aesthetic tools including makeup, fashion, and other types of body modification, there are trends depending on whatever society has collectively decided is most ideal at the time. We can see these trends reflected in the types of plastic surgeries patients choose to have, but we can also see them in patients' approaches with specific procedures. Now, let's look at the current trends in breast augmentation.

Current Trends In Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most instructive example. Despite the overall trend towards non-invasive procedures, breast augmentation continues to be one of the most popular elective surgeries in the world. However, the continuing popularity of breast augmentation doesn't mean that trends are static. The truth is quite the opposite, as the days of over-exaggerated busts and back problems have been gracefully replaced with more natural enhancement.

Embracing Smaller Cup Sizes

There are still plenty of women choosing the busty look, but it's no longer a one-size-fits-all trend. We now have a better appreciation for proportion and choosing cup sizes. With this we can enhance a woman's natural figure without overwhelming her. As a result, full B cups and C cups are far more popular today than in the late nineties and early 2000s. This trend has helped women to subtly adjust their form, creating a tighter, more lifted look.

Gummy Bears Aren't Just For Eating

Size preferences aren't the only change in the breast augmentation world. Women now have a number of options when it comes to implants. The "gummy bear" implant is one of the most recent. Unlike other silicone implants, the "gummy bear" is made of a silicone gel. So it won't disperse even if the implant ends up compromised. It holds its shape, and proves less likely to wrinkle. To put it frankly, this implant is a major advancement.

"Gummy bear" implants are also shaped differently. Traditional silicone implants are shaped more like a uniform sphere, causing the breasts to bulge near the clavicle. Now, if you want the permanent push-up bra look, then a traditional silicone implant may be right for you. However, do you want a more gradual transition towards the clavicle and a fuller bust near the cleavage? Then the "gummy bear" implant offers much better results. You can go over all of your implant options when you meet with your board-certified surgeon to discuss having cosmetic surgery in Tampa.

The Possibility of Being Implant-Free

Another major change is the growing popularity of breast augmentation with fat transfer. The procedure works by taking fat from another part of your body, sterilizing it, and injecting it into the breast. Keep in mind that your board-certified plastic surgeon can only safely remove a small amount of fat. For many patients, the limit is between six and eight pounds, but it will vary depending on your physical condition.

Once the fat has been reinjected into the breast, your body will reabsorb some of it. Data shows that the average reabsorption rate is about 33%. Therefore, if your surgeon is only able to take six pounds of fat from other areas, you may be able to increase each breast by about two pounds at most. This is assuming that you have the skin and breast tissue to support that much extra fat. For the most part, breast augmentation with fat transfer is reserved for patients who only want a small increase in cup size and slight reshaping.

Improving Your Breast Augmentation Experience

If you want to have a breast augmentation in Tampa, your first step is to find a board-certified plastic surgeon with an established history of happy patients. That means you're working with a recognized expert who will keep you safe while providing the results you want. Your board-certified plastic surgeon will discuss every aspect of your procedure with you. They may even suggest a secondary procedure such as a breast lift to help ensure you get everything you want from this experience.
