Both men and women have the potential to experience hair loss as they age. Hair loss is usually due to genetics but may also result from hormonal factors. Many consider hair loss to be a source of worry or stress. Hair loss can alter a person’s appearance and sometimes make them feel self-conscious.

Many shampoos and over-the-counter products promise to promote hair growth and improve hair thickness, but their effectiveness is limited.Hair restoration is the most promising treatment for hair thinning and hair loss. At SynergyMD Plastic Surgery in Tampa, FL, Dr. Joseph M. Brown offers male and female hair transplant surgery options to restore fullness and thickness so that individuals feel confident in their appearance.

When to Consider Hair Restoration

Anyone who is experiencing thinning, a receding hairline, or areas of hair loss should consider hair restoration. However, hair transplant surgery is most effective once hair loss stabilizes. If a person is actively losing hair and undergoes a hair transplant, they may develop new areas of loss that require a secondary treatment. People experience hair loss differently, but in most cases, hair transplant surgery should not be performed before the age of 30. Before undergoing a hair transplant surgery, individuals can use medication or other hair restoration techniques to stabilize hair loss and prepare for surgical treatment.

Is There a Difference Between Male and Female Hair Transplant Surgery?

Males and females tend to experience hair loss differently. Males typically experience male pattern baldness, with hair loss affecting the front and top of the head. Female hair loss is usually more sporadic and doesn’t necessarily create a distinct pattern, although losing hair near the crown of the head is usual for females.

While the pattern of hair loss is frequently different for men and women, they can benefit from the same hair restoration treatment. Dr. Brown performs follicular unit extraction (FUE) - a technique that enables him to customize hair transplant surgery to meet each patient’s needs.

FUE Hair Transplant

An FUE hair transplant takes individual donor hair follicles and transplants them to areas of the scalp where loss is a concern. The FUE procedure is preferred by many over the follicular unit transplant (FUT), which removes a strip of hair follicles for transplant purposes.

The FUE procedure is highly customizable. Hair follicles can be removed from various areas of the scalp and transplanted individually, making it ideal for our male and female Tampa patients. Some of the benefits of a FUE hair transplant include:

FUE with Medication and Scalp Injections

There are non-surgical hair restoration techniques to address hair loss. Many people consider hair loss medications, such as Rogaine or Propecia, to promote hair growth. Scalp injections can also stimulate hair growth. While medication and injections can be beneficial, we advise our Tampa patients to use these methods as a supplement to hair transplant surgery rather than as an independent treatment. Hair growth with medication or injections alone is limited but can further enhance the effectiveness of an FUE hair transplant.
